A mom yesterday wanted to leave her 3 year old alone in the children's room while she went traipsing around the library. One of my staff overheard her and said, "you can't leave a child under the age of 8 unattended in the library."
So the lady thinks...and says, "Well what if she has the maturity of an eight year old?" Riiight. Well she was still told no, and got pissy. She was like, "This is H-ville...we're in the Bible Belt. Nothing is going to happen." So...the little girl was wandering around the children's room while the mom took a nap on one of the beanbags.
*sigh*
People...the library is NOT a safe place. Everyone uses the library...the savory and unsavory citizens. Child molesters LOVE to use the library to lurk for their next unsuspecting victims left alone by their parents. No, this is not Fayetteville, where we had a regular flasher who liked to frequent the children's section. But isn't your child's safety worth more than 10 minutes browsing the stacks by yourself?
I really gotta talk to the bigwigs about instituting a no-sleeping rule. I mean...when the homeless guys bring blankets and pillows...we have a problem.
